The Unicorn
12 High Street,
CUBLINGTON,
LU7 0LQ
It's hard not to feel jealous of the people of Cublington. The Unicorn is the sort of pub that everyone should have on their doorstep. Not only does the building date from the 17th century and thus have oodles of character (think low beams, open fires, old pictures of village life on the walls and mismatched wooden furniture), but it serves up some excellent food, stretching to cooked breakfasts on Saturday mornings, and coffee and afternoon tea with home-made cakes throughout the week. The pub even doubles up as a village shop, selling home-made bread, milk, wine, butter, stamps and Cublington greetings cards. There's a lovely garden out the back, where you can sit to enjoy anything from a full meal to a doorstop sandwich and a pint of real ale. If you're after the former, you might begin with a well-made tomato and basil soup with superb home-made bread, followed, perhaps, by an exemplary beer battered cod and chips - the fish moist and perfectly cooked, and the batter as light and crisp as can be. Dessert could be an airy dark chocolate fondant cake with home-made ice cream.

We stumbled upon this lovely typically English pub whilst actually looking for somewhere else but were so glad that we did. From the lovely log burning stove to the beautiful fresh food everything added up to a perfect Sunday lunch. The only downside was being leapt upon as soon as we walked in the door, my husband likes to peruse the ales on offer before we decide if we are staying! I would recommend this pub to anyone.

Having visited The Unicorn on a number of occasions, we decided to try the much-publicised early evening barbecue. The food at The Unicorn never fails to impress, be it cooked by visiting French Chefs or the local team, and the barbecue was no exception. The food was freshly cooked - no piles of meat waiting to be dished out! - and the accompanying salad was delicious. Whilst no longer barbecue weather, I am looking forward to my next meal at The Unicorn fully recommend it to anyone
