The Unicorn

12 High Street, CUBLINGTON, LU7 0LQ

2 rosettes

The welcome is warm and sincere, the menu chock-full of the sort of unfussy modern pub food that makes you want a bit of everything, and the 17th-century interior is replete with low beams, open fires, homely mismatched wooden furniture, and old pictures of village life on the walls. The place is the hub of local life too, selling home-made bread, milk, wine, butter, stamps and Cublington greetings cards. And the food lives up to its promise, whether it is a cooked breakfast on Saturday mornings, coffee and afternoon tea with home-made cakes throughout the week - which is rather nice out in the lovely garden - or a doorstop sandwich and a pint of real ale. If you want to put the kitchen through its paces properly, go for the full three-courses: smoked wood pigeon and chicory salad with apple chutney and toasted pumpkin seeds to start, then slow-roast pork belly with mash, braised red cabbage, and sage and cider jus. Wrap it all up with toffee and date pudding with clotted cream and toffee sauce.
