The Red Lion Inn

74 High Street, CRICKLADE, SN6 6DD

1 rosettes

A 17th-century inn with cosy beams, log fires and real ales from its own Hop Kettle microbrewery. Food is taken as seriously as the beer - the pub rears its own pigs, and veggies come from locals' allotments. Choose the bar for pub grub done right, or the contemporary country-chic dining room where the kitchen turns out dishes such as pan-fried local wood pigeon with beetroot carpaccio, smoked potato purée and chervil, ahead of a three-way serving of wild rabbit (loin, confit leg and faggot) with celeriac purée, dauphinoise potato and baby vegetables. For pud, perhaps chocolate and griottine cherry sponge with chocolate sauce and home-made cookie dough ice cream.
