Between the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, Clearwell is well placed for exploring the great outdoors, and the Wyndham can sort you out when it comes to R&R. It's certainly got character - the oldest part of the building dates from the 14th century - and plenty of original features remain, including a large open fire in the bar. The dining room has oak beams and stone walls, plus a domed cellar area adding to the charm of it all. It's a smart space, though, with tea lights flickering on unclothed tables, and lots of Gloucestershire produce on the menu. Gloucestershire Old Spot pig makes an appearance, of course, perhaps in a house special of roasted loin of free-range pork with mash and Severn cider sauce, preceded perhaps by twice-baked soufflé of local cheeses and mature cheddar sauce. Finish with vanilla pannacotta with a ginger biscuit crumb and rhubarb compôte. Note there are local ciders and ales to be had in the bar.
