Occupying a corner site in the town centre, Hamilton's is a small and intimate restaurant with rooms, with a warm and welcoming feel from its hands-on proprietors. Semi-frosted windows look out onto the street, allowing for a spot of people-watching as you take in the ambience in the stylishly done out space. Chef-patron Carter Williamson deals in thoughtfully presented modern European dishes using top-notch seasonal ingredients. Smoked venison carpaccio with mizuna cress salad, quail's egg, parsnip crisps and truffle oil is a simple starter done well, or you might go for seared king scallops (precisely timed) with wasabi potato purée, pickled cucumber and lotus root. Scallops turn up again in a main-course pairing with oriental belly pork, along with bok choy, sweet soy reduction and crispy lotus root - a winning combination of tastes and textures. Raspberry vodka jelly with raspberry and mint salad and vanilla bean ice cream ends things on a high.
