In a quiet side street of the towns main drag, The Royal Well Tavern is a reborn boozer which has plenty of 21st-cenury appeal. It looks good and clubby with polished darkwood, leather banquettes and gilt-framed pictures on the wall. The daily-changing menu fuses the French bistro with the British pub to deliver uncomplicated stuff with bags of appeal. Start with tempura mackerel and Russian salad or some Fowey River oysters, moving on to roast monkfish with cherry tomatoes, spinach and purple cress, and end in the comfort zone with chocolate bread-and-butter pudding with dates and Amaretto. The all-French wine list is available by 250ml carafe as well as by the bottle providing a good excuse to try something new.
