Close to the centre of Cambridge, this lovely Victorian mansion is home to a sleek hotel which artfully combines original features with a contemporary finish. The Graffiti restaurant has modern art on the walls, burnished darkwood floors, unclothes tables and looks out over three acres of landscaped gardens. A drink or meal outside on the large terrace is a fair-weather treat, while an open fire in the middle of the restaurant warms things up at chillier times of the year. The brasserie-style menu goes down a mod Brit road with plenty of sunny Mediterranean flavours along the way. Baby squid is filled with chorizo sausage, capers and parsley, and served with a tomato fondue and red pepper coulis, while main-course fillet and blade of Tilbury Meadow beef comes with a shallot tarte Tatin. Considered combinations and sound technique are maintained until the end: apple, griottine cherry and almond strudel served with brown butter ice cream.
