The Pump House

Merchants Road, Hotwells, BRISTOL, BS8 4PZ

2 rosettes

Chef-proprietor Toby Gritten has made great use of the hydraulic pumping station down on the waterside where the docks meet the River Avon to create a buzzy gastro-pub and restaurant. You can eat downstairs in the pub part of the operation, outside by the water's edge, or head upstairs to the dinner-only mezzanine for a little more refinement and a little less hubbub. Gritten likes to bang the drum for local produce, including foraged materials, and doesn't cut corners, making everything from bread to chutneys in-house. Depending on the season, you might start with seared Bath chap with apple, celeriac and a fried quail's egg, or game terrine with forced rhubarb and chicory. This is robust and hearty stuff, but not without refinement. Main-course venison steak with root vegetables and smoked bone marrow is one way to go, but there's also the likes of roast gurnard with walnuts, parsley and brown shrimps. End on a lemon and lime theme with lemon croquette, kaffir lime leaves and sorbet, and toasted marshmallow.
