The Grove, BRISTOL, BS1 4RB

1 rosettes

With its acres of glass and two terraces, it should be possible to see the water wherever you sit. But truth be told, this place is all about the atmosphere and the food. It looks thoroughly modern in the industrial-chic manner-the building was once a river police station-and there's a buzzy café-bar downstairs and cool restaurant on the first floor. The food is serious stuff, based on first-rate seasonal ingredients, and inspiration is drawn from far and wide without ever losing focus. Spice crab börek, for example, come with pickled green tomatoes and sweet chilli dressing, while haricot bean and almond soup is served with mandarin oil and chervil root. These are bright, modish dishes rooted in good culinary sense. Fillet of Cornish gurnard is paired with wild red rice, pak choi and black bean sauce among main courses, and to finish, warm pear and quince crumble with vanilla ice cream is a winning combo.
