The Grove, BRISTOL, BS1 4RB
As the name suggests, this cool, contemporary glass-fronted city venue (once a river police station) is set on the waterfront and has cracking views. Split over two levels, downstairs is a relaxed café-bar, upstairs the restaurant, and both have terraces overlooking the water. The restaurant's modish brasserie roster of dishes is based around local, seasonal produce, and everything - from bread to chutney and ice cream - is made in-house. Classic Mediterranean fish soup comes with the anticipated croûtons and rouille, and main courses extend to the likes of pan-fried stone bass fillet served with black-eyed bean purée, plantain fritters and mango salsa. Finish with pear and almond frangipane tart and Seville orange curd cream. Good value fixed-price lunches are a bonus.
