Llugwy River Restaurant@Royal Oak Hotel

Holyhead Road, BETWS-Y-COED, LL24 0AY

1 rosettes

Cappuccino-coloured walls with yellow sconces and ceiling chandeliers characterise the restaurant at this Victorian coaching inn, with dining chairs in a stripy fabric pulled up at lightwood tables on a patterned carpet, all brightly comfortable. The kitchen staunchly supports local suppliers and assembles a concise menu that buzzes with interest, often displaying Eastern influence. As well as chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade, starters may run to scallop carpaccio with lime sabayon, mango jelly and pea shoots. Main courses vary from a duo of lamb (roast rump and faggot) with bubble-and-squeak, ratatouille and red wine jus to grilled sea bass with Thai-spiced risotto and green curry cream. Game shows up in season - perhaps whole roast partridge with parsnip purée, red cabbage and fig tart - and to end there may be tiramisù with coffee ice cream.
