James Street South Restaurant & Bar
21 James Street South,
BELFAST,
NI,
BT2 7GA
This former linen mill in a quiet side street in the city centre has a cool, contemporary look, with modern artwork hung on white walls and leather-look seats on the wooden floor, and the menu is on the money too, with its neat typeface and clear design. Chef Niall McKenna uses the best of local produce combining classical French techniques with bright, up-to-date ideas. Cured salmon is accompanied by beetroot, cucumber and avocado crème fraîche, for example, and foie gras comes with white asparagus and rhubarb. His expertise delivers perfectly judged sea trout paired with ham, served with clams and braised artichoke, and saddle of rabbit with truffle and ricotta gnocchi, girolles and onion vinaigrette, while puddings hit the spot, with tarte Tatin, or pineapple carpaccio with mojito sorbet and blueberry jelly.

Had never been here before and had heard good reviews We had a set lunch -£16 for 2 courses or £18 for 3. We found the food nice but portions small and ALL extras eg potato and veg are not included £3 for a v small bowl of champ. It then works out quite expensive. Wine by glass £5. Dining room very very white and rather boring. Would rather go to Cafe Vaudeville - at least the decor is interesting.

Have eaten here several times since opening nearly ten years ago and have noticed things change quite a bit. My first experience was disappointing, overworked expensive, fussy food, trying too hard to become the next Deanes. Recently I have eaten more solidly cooked food, less complicated, and feel they have found their own style offering great value for money in stylish surroundings, a great addition to the Belfast dining scene.
