Perched in an unforgettable clifftop location on the Lizard Peninsula, the Mullion Cove Hotel is surrounded by pristine National Trust-owned land. With the Cornish coastal path at the very doorstep, there's no excuse for not working up a keen appetite with long walks past blankets of wild flowers, exploring secluded coves and stopping off for a dip here and there in gin-clear waters. Naturally, the hotel makes the most of its jaw-dropping vistas of the eponymous cove and Bird Island - there is a decked terrace perfect for alfresco summer dining, and the sun-drenched - and aptly-named - Atlantic View Restaurant basks in the same glorious panorama. All in all, a tasty proposition, and the same could be said of the cooking which offers uncomplicated up-to-date dishes built on the solid foundations of top-grade Cornish materials. When the tang of salty air is all around, local fish and seafood has to be worth a bet - coriander aïoli and a crab and sweetcorn beignet might put a Thai-influenced spin on a crab bisque, ahead of pan-fried mackerel fillets teamed with seafood brandade, chilli-spiked samphire, roast cherry tomato and lemon beurre blanc. Finish with the homely comfort of bread-and-butter pudding with crème anglaise.
