A tiny, no-choice restaurant run by just two people might come as a surprise turning up in the middle of Ashbourne, but it sure works. In a building that dates back to the reign of James I, the low-beamed ceilings, wood-burning stove and mere half-dozen tables build to a fantastic atmosphere in which to enjoy Pete Dale's food. Trust in his very seasonal menu that always includes mini Derbyshire beef burger and fries, often includes some of their home-cured or smoked fish or meats, and which might include a main course of Ashbourne rose veal with eryngii mushrooms, ramsons (wild garlic) and wheat grains (quite possibly foraged by the owners.) A classic dessert here is their hot and cold treacle pudding.
