The Old Stamp House Restaurant

Church Street, AMBLESIDE, LA22 0BU

2 rosettes

It's not widely known that William Wordsworth was Cumbria's 'Distributor of Stamps' back in 19th century, and this is where he plied his trade. The organic and foraged ingredients on show make this is a thoroughly modern sort of restaurant. Prices are fair given the craft and creativity, with the fixed-price lunch a veritable bargain. Things kick off with excellent bread before first-course smoked Furness wood pigeon with beetroot turned out fashionably in an array of textures, plus celeriac purée and pickled cherries. Next up, Whitehaven turbot, cooked just right, or Alston Moor red grouse with Scottish girolles and truffle jus. Finish with a dazzling Amaretto parfait.
