The Old Vine

8 Great Minster Street, WINCHESTER, SO23 9HA

An elderly vine rambles all over the street frontage of this elegant pub, built on Saxon foundations in the 18th century. Directly opposite is Winchester's fine cathedral and the City Museum. There are four guest beers, including local ales, in the oak-beamed bar, where you can eat sandwiches, salads and light meals. Freshly prepared, in the restaurant are, typically, starters like pork and chive Scotch egg with piccalilli; home-cured Scottish salmon with mustard and dill dressing; or twice-baked blue cheese and walnut soufflé; followed by creamy crab and prawn bake; West Country mussels steamed in Somerset cider, shallots, bacon and crème fraîche; or pea and asparagus ravioli with pea pureé and mushrooms. Puddings include fruity summer berry pudding; vanilla cheesecake with raspberry coulis; and butterscotch and treacle sponge pudding. At the back of the pub you'll find a flower-filled patio.
