Set in the pretty riverside village of West Tanfield, this 18th-century stone-built pub is a great base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. The pub's bistro-style interior exudes charm with traditional exposed beams, log fires and candles on the tables. Expect a good wine list, real ales from the local Black Sheep Brewery, and heartfelt cooking from owner Hugh Carruthers using the best of local produce. Choices include home-cured ham, egg and chips, and contemporary British and European cuisine. There is a lovely alfresco dining area for summer. It's a handy base for visiting the races at both Ripon and Thirsk, and famous sights such as Fountains Abbey.
