This characterful 17th century, tile-hung inn is a popular haunt for locals practising the art of alley skittles and visitors to the Somerset Levels which stretch away to the distant Mendip Hills. Sympathetically renovated, the cosy, wavy-beamed interior with fine old photos of the area is warmed on winter days by grand log fires, enough to take the chill off the winds whipping in from nearby Bridgwater Bay. Draw close to the bar to inspect the panoply of excellent beers, often from micro-breweries in Somerset (and generously supplemented at their August Bank Holiday beer festival); here too may be Richs Cider created at a local farm just a couple of miles distant. The classic food here also tends to be very locally sourced; settle in with button mushrooms and lardons of smoky bacon in a garlic and white wine cream sauce before indulging in a Somerset steak or a choice of pie of the day, a home-made West Country treat using the freshest ingredients which may change daily. There is a large enclosed beer garden and children's play area.
