Brackenrigg Inn
Description
The breathtaking views across Lake Ullswater and its surrounding fells are beyond compare from the elevated terrace and fine gardens at this traditional 18th-century coaching inn. An appealing, homely feel is retained inside the long, white-washed inn, thanks in part to the attractive panelled bar, with its welcoming atmosphere, glowing winter fires, polished board floor, and views over the surrounding countryside. There's a good choice of real ales, such as Coniston Bluebird, Jennings Cumberland and Copper Dragon 1816, and the wine list is well balanced and full of interest, with helpful suggestions on food and wine pairing and a choice of 13 by the glass. Fresh local produce is to the fore on the comprehensive all-day menu. Typical choices include starters of pan-fried chicken liver and bacon salad with red wine and balsamic dressing; ham hock terrine wrapped in Cumbrian air-dried ham with home-made piccalilli, and deep-fried calamari with tartare sauce. Follow, perhaps, with braised lamb shank with colcannon mash and pan gravy, fish pie, Ullswater beef with hand-cut chips and all the trimmings, and Cumberland sausage with mustard mash and red onion gravy. If time is short, try one of the excellent sandwiches (crab and spring onion crème faiche). If you can't tear yourselves away from the peace and beauty of the place, there are smart bedrooms, some housed in the newly refurbished Stables Cottages, where a good night's sleep and a traditional Cumbrian breakfast are guaranteed. This is a superb base for exploring the delights of the North Lakes - walking, climbing, watersports, golf, or touring by car.
