High Street, THORNHAM, Hunstanton, PE36 6LY
Formerly a smugglers' haunt, this 400-year-old whitewashed inn has evolved over the years into the stylish family-run country pub it is today. Standing in the centre of the village opposite the church, The Orange Tree is a useful stop for walkers on the Peddars Way. Develop an appetite with a stroll to the local staithe, where working fishing boats still come and go through the creeks of Brancaster Bay, before returning for a pint of East Anglian-brewed ale. Chef Philip Milner makes the most of freshly landed local seafood but it's not just the fish that justifies his claim that the restaurant is the jewel in The Orange Tree's crown; the pub has a long-established relationship with local suppliers, and most of the meat is sourced from the Sandringham Estate. Children will love the climbing frame in the pub's garden.
