The Sawley Arms

SAWLEY, Fountains Abbey, HG4 3EQ

After 42 years in the same family, this delightful 200-year-old free house has now passed to the next generation, Robin and Nicky Jaques. Just a mile from Fountains Abbey and surrounded by stunning gardens, it was a frequent haunt of the late author and vet James Herriot. The varied modern British menu lists dishes that range from roast Nidderdale lamb rump with bubble-and-squeak mash and red wine and rosemary gravy; to butternut squash, spinach and Yorkshire fettle pie with smoked tomato sauce.
