Main Street, CORBRIDGE, Hexham, NE45 5LA
A handsome, white-painted inn overlooking the widest part of Main Street. Formerly the King's Head, it was extended in the 18th century and from 1752 was the town's posting inn until the railway station opened in 1835. The lounge has a log fire, but the real hub is the bar where Hadrian Border and Wylam ales, and all-day food are available. For a more formal meal it has to be the Barn Restaurant and its herb-crusted loin and confit shoulder croquette of 'own farm' lamb, smoked almond and blackberry purée; Northumberland beef sirloin steak; beer-battered North Shields cod, hand-cut chips and mushy peas; or potato and chive gnocchi.
