Penzance Drive, SWINDON, SN5 7JL
Built in 1906, the former Great Western Railway Weighhouse was transformed by experienced operator Anthony Windle into a stunning pub-restaurant concept, complete with microbrewery. Many original features have been retained and the old railway building boasts brick walls and lofty ceilings, with a vast bar at one end, dispensing the six home-brewed ales and 25 wines by the glass from the extensive wine list, and an airy, smart and very comfortable dining room at the other. Extensive monthly menus may deliver half a smoked chicken, with sweet chilli, balsamic vinegar and Madeira sauce; pan-fried wild boar medallions; and for something a little different, Thai-style crocodile. There are seasonal fresh fish dishes, a wide choice of house-aged steak; and interesting vegetarian options. Portions are very generous but if you have room, there's home-made banoffee pie to finish.
