The Blackwell Ox Inn

Huby Road, SUTTON-ON-THE-FOREST, YO61 1DT

This inn's name celebrates a shorthorn Teeswater Ox that stood 6ft high at the crop and weighed 1,033 kilos. When the beast was slaughtered in 1779 its meat fetched £110, about £7,000 today. Built around 1823 as a private house, the pub's well-stocked bar offers Yorkshire ales like Timothy Taylor Landlord. The simple cooking style owes much to a North Yorkshire-focused sourcing policy for lunchtime hot and cold sandwiches, alongside dishes such as home-cured gravad lax with horseradish crème fraîche, Asian root vegetable casserole; venison en croûte, braised red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes. The inn has a terrace for alfresco dining.
