Huby Road, SUTTON-ON-THE-FOREST, YO61 1DT
This inn's name celebrates a shorthorn Teeswater Ox that stood 6ft high at the crop and weighed 1,033 kilos. When the beast was slaughtered in 1779 its meat fetched £110, about £7,000 today. Built around 1823 as a private house, the pub's well-stocked bar offers Yorkshire ales like Black Sheep. The simple cooking style owes much to a North Yorkshire-focused sourcing policy for lunchtime hot and cold sandwiches, alongside mussels, chips and aļoli; and sausage and mash. The restaurant menu could list pan-roasted cod loin, rib-eye steak, and feta cheese and roast vegetable tart. The inn has a terrace for alfresco dining.
