Although many people associate St Andrews purely with golf, this 400-year-old coaching inn with rooms is the exception to the rule as it doubles up as an award-winning live music venue. Lindisfarne and Curtis Stigers are among the many luminaries who perform here and the walls display one of the best collections of music memorabilia in the country. Ancient meets modern here and guests can relax in deep sofas and enjoy excellent ales from Orkney Brewery around log-burners. For the past 13 years the chefs here have been awarded two AA Rosettes; their innovative cooking of well sourced local ingredients can be judged from starters that include game spiced terrine or leek and Dunsyre Blue tart with mixed leaves and hazelnut dressing. Mains come up trumps, too, with roasted sea bass with mussels and prawns, lemon and fennel sauce, or slow-roasted belly of pork with sautéed wild mushrooms and pak choi. Smart, contemporary accommodation is available.
