The Saracen's Head

Church Lane, SHIRLEY, DE6 3AS

Overlooking the front garden and village street, the 1791-built Saracen's Head takes its name from the family crest of Sewallis de Scyrle (pronounced Shirley), a Holy Land crusader. All dishes are made on the premises from local, ethical sources. Starting with creamy garlic button mushrooms, it's an easy move to, say, slowly braised beef bourguignon with creamy mash and vegetables; or warm cheddar and caramelised onion quiche. For a quintessential country pub experience, visit on a Sunday at lunchtime.
