The Fat Cat
23 Alma Street,
SHEFFIELD,
S3 8SA
This reputedly haunted three-storey, back street pub was built in 1832, and is Grade II listed. Beer-wise, it's hard to imagine anywhere better: a constantly changing range of guest beers from across the country, especially from micro-breweries, makes for a real ale heaven. Two hand-pumped ciders, unusual bottled beers and 21 country wines (the likes of elderberry and cowslip) are also sold, while the Kelham Island Brewery, owned by the pub, accounts for at least four of the ten traditional draught real ales on offer. The number of different beers sold since the concept was introduced now exceeds 4,500. The smart interior is very much that of a traditional, welcoming city pub; outside there's an attractive walled garden complete with Victorian-style lanterns, bench seating and shrubbery. Real fires in winter complete the cosy feel. Home-cooked food from a simple weekly menu is available except on Sunday evenings - nutty mushroom pie or Mexican chicken casserole. Look out for special events such as Monday curry night, beer and food evenings.

Absolutely fabulous and could easily have stayed in here for the entire day if time permitted. A great selection of bottled drinks behind the bar and a very wide array of beers on tap. The price of the food was just so value for money and chose the steak pie with potatoes, peas and gravy, followed by jam roly-poly with custard. So refreshing to go somewhere that does not even attempt to be pretentious with regards to food.
