The Fat Cat
23 Alma Street,
SHEFFIELD,
S3 8SA
Built in 1832, it was known as The Alma Hotel for many years, then in 1981 it was the first Sheffield pub to introduce guest beers. The policy continues, with constantly changing, mainly micro-brewery, guests from across the country, two hand-pumped ciders, unusual bottled beers, Belgian pure fruit juices and British country wines. The pub's own Kelham Island Brewery accounts for at least four of the eleven traditional draught real ales. The smart interior is very much that of a traditional, welcoming back-street pub, with real fires making it feel very cosy, while outside is an attractive walled garden with Victorian-style lanterns and bench seating. Except on Sunday evenings, typical home-cooked food from a simple weekly menu is broccoli cheddar pasta; Mexican mince and nachos; and savoury bean casserole. Events include the Monday quiz and curry night, and £1.30 a pint evening beer offers.

Absolutely fabulous and could easily have stayed in here for the entire day if time permitted. A great selection of bottled drinks behind the bar and a very wide array of beers on tap. The price of the food was just so value for money and chose the steak pie with potatoes, peas and gravy, followed by jam roly-poly with custard. So refreshing to go somewhere that does not even attempt to be pretentious with regards to food.
