Dating back to 1468 and close to the Test Way long-distance walk, this rambling, cream-painted pub, festooned with flowers in the summer, nestles in the Test Valley just a stone's throw from England's foremost trout river. There are large gardens at the front and a rear terrace, while inside there's a beamed bar with a big winter log fire, a cosy snug and four other comfortable rooms. Since taking over in 2009, Karen Slowen has built a strong customer base for her range of real ales - at least four guests beers change on a weekly basis - and the enjoyable food she offers at lunch and dinner. Fresh fish and shellfish appear on the daily specials board, with lobster and crab favourites during the summer months. On the supper menu you'll find 'Things you expect on a pub menu' such as the Dukes' burger; other main courses take in pork belly with roast onion mash and black pudding, and desserts such as treacle tart. There is a beer festival in May and September.
