The Cock

Uckfield Road, RINGMER, Lewes, BN8 5RX

This 16th-century inn takes its name from the time when a 'cock horse' was a spare horse used by coachmen to pull heavy loads - immortalised in the nursery rhyme Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross. A mustering point during the Civil War, the interior of the main bar is pretty much unaltered since Cromwell's time, with oak beams, flagstone floors and a blazing fire in the inglenook. Harvey's, and two local guest ales accompany a truly extensive menu. Main courses include venison sausages with mash and onion gravy; and salmon fillet with cream and watercress sauce. A good vegetarian choice is always available.
