Charles Bathurst Inn
Description
Cosy fires and antique pine furniture greet customers entering this 18th-century free house. Strategically located on the edge of the Pennine Way and close to the mid-point of the coast-to-coast walk, the inn is set in remote and beautiful Arkengarthdale. The building was formerly a bunkhouse for lead miners employed by Charles Bathurst, an 18th-century lord of the manor and son of Oliver Cromwell's physician. Today, the owners pride themselves on knowing the provenance of all their food, and the daily menu is written up on an imposing mirror hanging at the end of the bar. Starters might include butternut squash and Parmesan risotto; and pan-fried mackerel on Greek salad. For a hearty lunch try steamed steak and red wine suet pudding with parsnip mash; or the lighter goats' cheese, tomato and red onion tartlet; followed, perhaps, by plum crumble with crème Anglaise. There are 19 en suite bedrooms if you would like to stay over for a spot of walking, mountain biking, horse riding or angling.
