Television fans will recognize the spectacularly rugged dales scenery around this 18th-century inn as it appeared in the series All Creatures Great and Small. This remote country inn takes its name from the son of Oliver Cromwell's physician who built it for his workers. In winter, it caters for serious ramblers tackling The Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast route, and it offers a welcome escape from the rigours of the moors. English classics meet modern European dishes on a menu written up on the mirror hanging above the stone fireplace. Choose from a selection of real ales including Black Sheep and enjoy white onion and blue cheese tartlet with spiced tomato chutney, followed by Gressingham duck breast, confit fennel, potato rösti and orange sauce. A decent bin of wines includes 12 by the glass. The 19 bedrooms with fabulous Dales views may tempt others to extend their visit.
