Nestling in the spectacular scenery of the most rugged and remote of the Yorkshire Dales, Arkengarthdale, this country inn caters for serious ramblers tackling The Pennine Way and the Coast-to-Coast route. The inn takes its name from the 18th-century lord of the manor and son of Oliver Cromwell's physician who built it for his workers. In winter, it offers a welcome escape from the rigours of the moors. The 19 bedrooms overlooking beautiful dales scenery may tempt other visitors to linger and enjoy the attractions of the area, including locations used in the television series All Creatures Great and Small. The daily menu - a happy mix of old English and modern European - is written up on an imposing mirror hanging above a stone fireplace. Choose from a selection of real ales and enjoy crab spring roll with crisp noodle salad or spicy lamb kofta and tomato salsa to start, followed by supreme of corn-fed chicken with smoked bacon filo parcel or smoked haddock fillet with a leek and Cheddar tart, poached egg and hollandaise sauce. A decent bin of wines includes 12 by the glass. For private dining, there is the Terrace Room complete with handcrafted tables and chairs by Robert Thompson.
