The Black Swan

RAVENSTONEDALE, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4NG

A previous winner of the AA Pub of the Year for England, The Black Swan is set in a pretty conservation village, nestling below Wild Boar Fell beside the frothy headwaters of the River Eden. The enterprising owners of this family-run residential inn have placed themselves right at the heart of the community; their on-site village store was opened by HRH Prince Charles in 2008. The imposing Victorian inn's tranquil riverside garden is home to red squirrels, which you might spot after you've walked the Howgill Fells, explored the Lakes or toured the Yorkshire Dales, all of which are on the doorstep. The ever-changing selection of northern beers includes the likes of Dent, Hawkshead and Tirril. Reliance on local produce is also evident in the choice of dishes, with all meat traceable. The menu might include a starter of beef carpaccio, a precursor to pan-fried monkfish wrapped in Cumbrian pancetta with a prawn and chilli risotto.
