The Royal Oak

High Street, RAMSDEN, OX7 3AU

Built of Cotswold stone and facing Ramsden's fine parish church, this former 17th-century coaching inn is a popular refuelling stop for walkers exploring nearby Wychwood Forest and visitors touring the pretty villages and visiting Blenheim Palace. Whether you are walking or not, the cosy inn oozes traditional charm and character, with its old beams, warm fires and stone walls, and long-serving landlords John and Jo Oldham provide a very warm welcome. A free house, it dispenses beers sourced from local breweries, such as Hook Norton Hooky Bitter and Old Hooky, alongside Flying Monk and Wye Valley. Somerset's Original Cider Company supplies the bar with Pheasant Plucker cider, alongside Mortimers Orchard from Herefordshire. With a strong kitchen team, the main menu, built on the very best of fresh local and seasonal ingredients, regularly features a pie of the week topped with puff pastry, or the popular steak and kidney suet pudding; there are popular choices such as starters of oven-baked baby brie; devilled lamb's kidneys with Dijon mustard sauce; or chargrilled aubergine, sun-dried feta cheese and piquant tomato sauce. Typical mains are confit of duck, Puy lentils, garlic potatoes, red berry and quince sauce; seafood pot au feu; Gymkhana Club curry, a traditional Sri Lankan dish, served with rice and pickles; and a choice of Aberdeen Angus steaks and burgers. Carefully selected by the owner, the wine list has over 200 wines, specialising in those from Bordeaux and Languedoc, with 30 of them served by the glass. Every Thursday evening there is a special offer of steak, with a glass of wine and dessert included.
