PORTHLEVEN, Helston, TR13 9JS
Dating from the 17th century, this smugglers' inn is actually built into the cliffs, and is approached by a flight of stone steps. It overlooks one of the most picturesque harbours in Cornwall and in summer there's nothing better than sitting with a glass of one of the five ales on offer and watching the fishing boats coming and going; in winter, a log fire warms the interior, while the flames of a second flicker in the separate old smithy private function room. Beer mats and brasses adorn the ceiling and walls. The food is kept simple - fish pies, steak, mussels, crab and catch of the day.
