The Crown Inn

PISHILL, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 6HH

A pretty 15th-century brick and flint former coaching inn, The Crown began life in medieval times, serving ale to the thriving monastic community, then providing refuge to Catholic priests escaping Henry VIII's tyrannical rule. Fast-forward to the Swinging 60s, and the neighbouring thatched barn housed a nightclub hosting George Harrison, Dusty Springfield and other big names from the world of pop. In the pub itself, the bar is supplied by mostly local breweries, typically Brakspear. Lunch and dinner are served from Wednesdays through to Sunday lunchtime and may be enjoyed inside, where there are three log fires, or in the picturesque garden overlooking the valley. Depending on the season, you might find pan-roasted lamb rump, wild garlic purée, potato and heritage carrot dauphinoise, sautéed samphire and lamb jus; or pan-fried chicken supreme wrapped in Parma ham. In late September, there's a beer festival.
