The Old Queens Head

Hammersley Lane, PENN, HP10 8EY

Between the delightful villages of Penn and Tylers Green and with lovely walks in beech woodland on its doorstep, this old pub has bags of character and atmosphere. It's one of the well regarded Salisbury Pubs mini-empire in and around the Chilterns.* The timber built dining room dates from 1666 (word of the Great Fire of London clearly hadn't reached here) when it was constructed as a barn, and although it has seen several additions since then, the cosy corners, undulating floors and real fires are reminders of its history. The owners have spent time at local auctions carefully selecting old furniture and pictures in keeping with the age of the pub. A sunny terrace overlooks the village church, and there's a large garden in which to eat and drink or you could settle by the fire with a pint of Ruddles County or a mug of hot chocolate. The kitchen team has created a modern British menu with starters of honey and fennel cured Scottish salmon, choucroute fritters and horseradish cream; and potted pork rillettes with warm oak-smoked bacon brioche bun and piccalilli. Main course options are similarly mouth watering - spaghetti with Cornish clams, garlic, chilli and parlsey; or Chiltern lamb faggot with slow-roasted garlic mash and minted gravy. For pudding, consider rhubarb and custard crème brûlée with almond biscotti or a plate of English cheeses. The wine list includes 24 by the glass and a separate pudding wine selection.
