Market Square, PEMBRIDGE, Leominster, HR6 9DZ
Formerly a courthouse and jail, and close to the site of the last battle of the War of the Roses, this 14th-century black and white timbered free house has been under the same ownership for over 30 years. Worn flagstone floors and winter fires characterise the cosy bar, and in summer customers spill out into the pub's outdoor seating area on the Old Market Square. Don't expect to find any background music or a TV screen. Home-cooked English fare, using local produce, might include beef steak and ale casserole with horseradish dumplings; hot game pie with Cumberland sauce; or garlic and cheese stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon.
