Maltkiln Lane, Bispham Green, PARBOLD, L40 3SG
This thriving village inn is set in the tranquil valley of the River Douglas and close to some lovely rambles on Parbold Hill. A pub that caters admirably for all-comers, the emphasis is on high-quality modern cooking using locally sourced seasonal produce. On the restaurant menu crispy duck egg, home-cured spiced bacon, celeriac and dashi is a typical opening gambit. Progress to roast breast of Goosnargh chicken, winter truffle and olive mash, Scottish morels; or pan-fried halibut steak, Puy lentils and warm salad of olives, tomatoes and capers. The bar menu is equally appealing; perhaps steak, ale and mushroom pie, mushy peas and triple-cooked chips. The traditionally styled pub is a popular village local, with an ever-changing array of beers from local microbreweries and farmhouse ciders, while the annual Early May Bank Holiday beer festival attracts up to 2,000 people to a huge marquee.
