This unusual free house dates from the 18th century and was created from Soughton Hall's original stable block; the magnificent main house was built as a bishop's palace, and original features like the cobbled floors and roof timbers remain intact. The selection of real ales includes Stables Bitter while diners can browse the wine shop for a bottle to accompany their meal. Lunch choices range from hot and cold light dishes and open sandwiches, with a seasonal à la carte dinner menu featuring perhaps slow-roasted pork belly with sage and onion mash, apple, black pudding and a spiced honey and orange sauce. Enjoy the gardens in summer.
