The Beer Engine

NEWTON ST CYRES, Exeter, EX5 5AX

This pretty whitewashed free house has new owners. It sits on the banks of the River Creedy, opposite the Tarka Line, and is popular with walkers. Home to one of Devon's oldest microbreweries, it offers a selection of four cask ales and a range of seasonal specials. Menus focus on hearty home-cooked British food - of which 85-90% is gluten free. Dishes might include home-made Scotch eggs; steak and ale pie; and confit duck leg. Save some room for the sticky toffee pudding, made with ale from the pub.
