The Wild Goose Inn

Combeinteignhead, NEWTON ABBOT, TQ12 4RA

An integral part of the village street scene, this former farmstead was first licensed as the Country House Inn in 1840; then, in the 1960s, when geese began intimidating customers, it acquired a new name. Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale and Sandford Orchards Devon Mist cider represent the county in the bar. New owners offer home-made pub food that includes game stew with herb dumplings at lunchtime, and in the evening ale-battered pollack, triple-cooked chips and mushy peas; pan-fried chicken breast with bacon jam, fondant potatoes and braised lettuce; and hay-baked heritage vegetables with violet potatoes. Tapas, pie and quiz nights are worth catching.
