NETHERLEY, By Stonehaven, AB39 3QS
A 15-minute drive from Aberdeen city centre brings you to this generously beamed inn, part of the scenery in rural Deeside for over 200 years. With all its nooks and crannies, the mot juste for the quarry-tiled interior can only be 'rambling'; in winter, woodsmoke drifts up from the unusual, slab-mounted central fire grate. In the bar Timothy Taylor Landlord is usually accompanied by two guest real ales, while the menu majors on Scottish produce, with starters of haggis, neeps, tatties croquettes, Savoy cabbage and Drambuie sauce; and Cullen skink. Unsurprisingly, Aberdeen Angus steaks have a high profile alongside smoked haddock, Arran cheddar and pea and dill fishcakes; puff pastry pie of the day; and roasted fillet and pulled lamb with honey-roasted parsnips, black pudding potatoes and rosemary and port jus. There's a light, bright conservatory with garden views, candlelit tables, gleaming brass and copper lamps, and bric-à-brac.
