The Hambro Arms

MILTON ABBAS, DT11 0BP

Many Dorset picture-postcards feature the 36 near-identical, late 18th-century thatched cottages of Milton Abbas, replacements for a nearby hamlet demolished by the privacy-seeking, landowning Earl of Dorchester. Built at the same time, the whitewashed pub thrives, its bar and outside tables perfect for a lunchtime snack, and the elegant Library Restaurant offering a full carte. Start with home-made duck liver and whisky pâté, or share a Mediterranean meze, including salami, chorizo, sun-dried tomatoes and Manchego cheese. Then pan-fried breast and confit leg of Bryanston pheasant; pistachio- and almond-crusted salmon; or wild mushroom and blue cheese risotto. Catch the July beer festival.
