39 High Street, MARSHFIELD, SN14 8LR
On the edge of the Cotswolds, this mainly 17th-century inn has the expected exposed brickwork and large open fireplaces offset by a simple, stylish decor. Menus are also simple and well presented, with favourites at lunchtime including steak and kidney pie; and jacket potatoes. In the evening look forward to potted smoked mackerel, lemon and herb pâté or tomato and goats' cheese tartlets, followed perhaps by venison stew and thyme dumplings or fish pie. A small but sunny patio is a lovely spot for a summertime pint of Butcombe Bitter or Thatchers cider.
