The Baskerville

Station Road, LOWER SHIPLAKE, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 3NY

Maybe, like many, you'll have reached this modern-rustic pub along the Thames Path, which briefly leaves the river to run through Lower Shiplake and passes two minutes from its door. The dog-friendly bar is adorned with sporting memorabilia and is home to real ales from the nearby Loddon and Marlow breweries, and some 17 wines by the glass. Food-wise, there's plenty of modern British choice on the bar menu and the carte, including devilled lamb's kidneys with crispy shallots; and Cornish rope-grown mussels with smoked bacon as starters; and mains such as bouillabaisse; braised Chiltern lamb shank with champ mash; and feta and spinach puff pastry roll with salsa verde. For lunch, maybe an open sandwich or chargrilled chicken and Caesar salad. The wine list extends to 60 bins, while owner Allan Hannah betrays his Scottish origins with over 40 malt whiskies. Summer Sunday barbecues are held in the pub's attractive garden.
