LOWER CHICKSGROVE, Nr Tisbury, SP3 6NB
An old cobbled path leads to the low latched door of this 14th-century inn. Step inside and you walk into a delightful bar with worn flagstones, exposed stone walls and old beams. Snuggle up by the large inglenook fireplace or relax in the intimate booth seating, perfect on a winter's evening. You can be certain to find three or four local real ales on tap, perhaps from Wiltshire brewery Plain Ales, and the wine list is comprehensive. Be sure to try the food: the kitchen team has won an AA Rosette for their seasonal dishes; these are chalked up on a blackboard because they change so frequently. Examples of starters are smoked haddock, salmon, cod and boiled egg fishcake, buttered spinach and clam chowder; or gnocchi, mushrooms, pesto, kale and crispy poached egg. Main dishes could be pork tenderloin stuffed with stem ginger, sage and quince; chicken breast stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and olives; or sea bass fillet with steamed mussels, saag aloo and masala sauce. Treacle tart or sticky toffee pudding for afters. Five bedrooms are also available.
