The Wheatsheaf Inn

LOW LORTON, CA13 9UW

Occasionally, landlord Mark Cockbain crosses the lane from his white-painted, 17th-century pub to fish for salmon and trout in the River Cocker. For visitors it's the panoramic views of the lush Vale of Lorton from the child-friendly beer garden that matter. The quaint, open-fired bar looks like a gamekeeper's lodge: "We like our locals to feel at home," says Mark's wife, Jackie. Real ales from Jennings in Cockermouth also help in that respect. On the menu are sticky sesame ribs; lemon pepper chicken goujons; local trout with lime, almond and parsley butter; and chilli con carne in a tortilla basket. The end of March is beer festival time.
