The Gold Cup Inn

LOW CATTON, Stamford Bridge, YO41 1EA

Refurbished, but it's still quite clear that this charming, family-run free house is old - 300 years old, in fact. Giveaways are the low beams and open fireplaces in the bar, now complemented by new wooden floors, modern fabrics and wall-mounted coach-lamps. Bar meals are served every lunchtime (except Monday) and evening from the extensive menu. Equally extensive is the carte, whose options include roast loin of pork or beef with Yorkshire pudding; hot and spicy Cajun chicken with mint yoghurt dip; and breaded Whitby scampi. A paddock adjoining the large beer garden runs down to the River Derwent.
