The Spencer

237 Lower Richmond Road, Putney, LONDON, SW15 1HJ

This landmark pub occupies a lofty position on green and leafy Putney Common. Its close proximity to the Thames makes it a popular base for boat race enthusiasts. The beer garden here is part of the common and the pub's picnic benches are hotly contested by those in search of an alfresco lunch. A light, bright and airy interior belies the rather traditional look of the place; revamped a few years ago, locals are welcomed at the bar where Timothy Taylor and Fuller's are the pick of the beers. Meals, in the bar or restaurant area, are traditional favourites embracing salads, pasta, burgers, shepherd's pie, and BBQ ribs with fries and home-made slaw. The extensive breakfast menu served from 9am is popular with early morning dog walkers and cyclists; the New Yorker - a golden waffle with two fried eggs and crispy bacon rashers - will set you up for the day.
