French House

49 Dean Street, Soho, LONDON, W1D 5BG

This historic pub was patronised by General de Gaulle during the Second World War, and later by Dylan Thomas, Francis Bacon, Dan Farson and many other louche Soho habitués. Run by Lesley Lewis for 22 years, its bar serves only half pints. The new upstairs restaurant, Polpetto, offers Venetian small plates: maybe lamb and pistachio meatballs; rabbit and sage terrine; and warm lentils; and Jerusalem artichoke with radicchio and truffle vinaigrette. Finish with pannacotta, rhubarb and biscotti.
