Hermit of Redcoats

Titmore Green, LITTLE WYMONDLEY, SG4 7JR

The hermit was James Lucas, who died in 1874. After meeting Lucas, Charles Dickens wrote Tom Tiddler's Ground, a short story based on him. At the front a picket fence encloses a pergola, tables and chairs; inside, the scene is set by painted quotations on the walls, old bottles on the mantelpiece, that sort of thing. Try house bitter Tirrells Hermit, one of 17 wines by the glass or maybe a gin - 52 varieties and counting - while your dog enjoys a complimentary biscuit. On the menu could be Dorset crab; sirloin steak, halibut or potato gnocchi; and the comforting pudding of spotted dick.
