Three Shires Inn

A slate-built Lake District hostelry sitting comfortably amidst the dry-stone walls and thick hedges along the winding lane to the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes. The pub is Lakeland through and through, from its Cumbrian-sourced food to real ales such as Cumbrian Legendary Melbreak Bitter and Coniston Old Man. Ian Stephenson and his family have run it for over 30 years, and everyone, including dogs, is made welcome in the beamed bar. A light lunch may comprise soup of the day and a ploughman's, or a plate of Cumberland sausage with fresh vegetables and chips. When it's cold there's a fire; when it's warm the place to settle is in the landscaped garden, where fell views are a bonus. For an evening meal, start with pan-fried scallops with Stornaway black pudding mousse; follow with a Cartmel Valley venison and cranberry burger; and finish with a selection of Lakeland ice creams. Comfortable accommodation includes self-catering options.
