The Ship Inn
Church Lane,
LEVINGTON,
Ipswich,
IP10 0LQ
The timbers of this 13th-century thatched inn overlooking the River Orwell are impregnated with the salt of the sea, and ghosts of bygone smugglers still occupy the many nooks and crannies. The Ship Inn stands within sight of the Suffolk marshes, where the hulks of beached sailing vessels were broken up for their precious beams. Indeed, families are welcome to enjoy the estuary views outside on the attractive front seats or on the rear patio. The interior walls and surfaces, however, are so full of maritime lamps, compasses and keepsakes that it's deemed an unsafe environment for children. There are two log-burning stoves in wintertime to keep things cosy. The service is informal, friendly and attentive. The sophisticated menu changes daily and focuses on executing a select number of dishes well. Starters may include pan-fried sardines with tomato and coriander salsa and might be followed by a main course confit of duck leg with red wine-braised cabbage and sweet potato fries.

My wife and I have visited the Ship on holiday for many years and have never received poor service or meals. I love the Ambience and the staff make you very welcome. It is nice not to have a load of ankle biters running amok, it makes my meal more enjoyable.
